Appalachian Wildlife Initiative
This video production was produced by Wild Visions, inc for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to showcase the numerous opportunities for reclaiming surface coal mine lands for elk and to provide habitat for all wildlife. To date, tens of thousands of acres of land in the Appalachian mountains have been restored to viable and productive wildlife habitat, restoring elk in the region where they were absent for 150 years due to over hunting and the westward expansion of settlers in the 1800's. Other states in the area are seeing an increase in elk populations due to these conservation efforts.
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation's mission is to ensure the future of elk, other wildlife, and their habitat and they are doing a great job with it. As of 2009, they have protected over 5 million acres of land.
